AWNS - THE INVISIBLE DANGER IN SUMMER

Everything you need to know about AWNS and how a SNOOD protects your dog.

What are awns?

Awns are the sharp, needle-like projections that grow on the ears (spikes) of certain grasses - particularly common on wild grasses such as barley, rye, or brome grass.

When is awn season?

In Germany, the season typically begins in May and lasts until late summer (August/September). During this time, meadows, field edges, roadside verges, and forest clearings pose a particular risk - precisely the places dogs love.

Why are awns dangerous?

They are designed to move in only one direction: forward.

Once they penetrate fur, skin, or mucous membranes, the dog's natural body movements drive them deeper into the tissue, potentially causing significant damage.

Awns are particularly treacherous because they do not come loose on their own. - On the contrary: every movement drives them further in.

Which areas are affected?

Areas at particular risk include:

  • Ears - awns can penetrate deep into the ear canal and cause severe inflammation
  • Eyes - irritation, inflammation, and, in the worst case, corneal damage
  • Nose - awns can be inhaled while sniffing and migrate into the nasal cavity
  • Paws - awns get stuck between the toes and burrow into the tissue
  • Fur & skin - especially in long-haired breeds with a dense undercoat

Typical warning signs

If your dog suddenly shakes vigorously, scratches, sneezes, or licks a specific spot after a walk, an awn could be the cause. Act quickly - the sooner an awn is removed, the lower the risk of infection or the need for surgery.

How do snoods protect your dog?

A SNOOD is a tubular head covering for dogs that protects the ears, throat & neck area. Originally hailing from the dog show world, the SNOOD has long since proven itself as a practical, protective accessory for everyday use.

ROYAL PAWS® SNOODS are crafted from high-quality, breathable materials and specifically protect the most sensitive areas:

  • Ears - The snood fully covers the ears, preventing grass awns from entering the ear canal - one of the most common and painful types of awn-related injuries.
  • Throat & Neck - The snood keeps long neck fur close to the body, leaving no place for grass awns to latch on.

Our recommendation

Consistently use a snood during walks in nature throughout the grass awn season (May to September). Thoroughly check your dog after every outing - inspecting their fur, ears, paws, and eyes. And if you are unsure: Simply have a vet take a quick look - it is better to be safe than sorry.
